Niner w/ Rohloff on eBay

I recently noticed this Niner One 9 on eBay. I've always thought that Rohloff 14 speed bomb-proof hub paired with a single speed 29er would be a great machine. Apparently, the Rohloff hubs are so robust that they don't have a service life... because they've never seen one fail!

The guy is asking for a $2025 Buy It Now price, which includes free shipping. A new hub and frame alone would cost that, let alone the front shock, wheels, and the rest of the components.

If the frame was my size and I had the scrilla to dish, I'd be all over this like saddle sore at the Leadville 100. Unfortunatley, I'll miss out on this sweet ride, but someone needs to buy this thing, ride it through a muddy swamp, and report the results.

Seems odd, all that in a bike and no hydros?

Yeah, but some people prefer the mechys. Personally, I've seen a handful of riders at South Mountain in Phoenix dripping brake fluid and having to ride out with one brake (usually the front).

I ride out with my single speed and mechanical discs thinking "more gizmos, more problems". If I have to squeeze a little harder and it takes a slightly longer to stop, I can live with that. Maybe I'm just too cheap.

At least they're not cantis - that would be really odd.

I only have hydros on my Trail Rig but I have BB7s on the 29er and 69er (well it's a mullet) because I too like the simplicity of them.

The mullet 69er. Long in the front, short in the rear. I hadn't heard that before.

It all depends what hydros you have, some can make you life absolute hell all the time like 08 XT’s and Avid Juicy’s and others can work forever with almost no maintenance like Hayes Stroker’s and Shimano Deore’s. Everyone seems to love the Avid BB7 you pictured because of the simplicity though.

I was pretty amazed how well the Rohloff stood up to the 18thousand miles Mark Beaumont gave it round the world.

Yeah, Hayes Strokers usually get great reviews...

For me, it's all about having something that I can fix on the trail if needed. I know I can't easily fix a hydro setup with a multi-tool. Mechanicals, however, no problem. You can even get by with a zip-tie fix if you're in a pinch.
